Note that this is the second and final round of public comment & submissions to this historic first application to irradiate food in Australia. ANZFA has set a closure date of 15 August 2001 for receipt of your comments or submissions.
ANZFA has posted a copy of the Draft Assessment Report to those who made a submission to the first round of public comment & submissions and who supplied their address. If you didn't make a submission to first round, you can contact ANZFA to request a copy of the Report (details below).
Please note that on page 24 of the Draft Assessment Report ANZFA has recommended the approval of Application A413 under Option 2.
Oil seeds, green & black teas and some varieties of nuts have now been dropped from Application A413 as a result of first round submissions from the general public, organisations and relevant industries. However remaining on the proposed list of food items to be irradiated under the Herbs and Spices category are the following: almonds, cashew nuts, pistachio nuts, peanuts, herbal infusions, herbs and spices.
No survey of vegetarians or lacto-ovo vegetarians was undertaken in Australia to assess the role of nuts in daily vitamin E intake. If you eat nuts as a significant proportion of your daily diet, this application may be of interest. For instance, in the Draft Assessment Report's List of Approvals for other countries in relation to these food items, (Attachment 1), tables are provided at page 36 which clearly indicate that only one country has approval to irradiate almonds: South Africa. Only three countries have approval to irradiate peanuts: China, Brazil and South Africa and only five countries have approval to irradiate nuts: Brazil, Ghana, Israel, Pakistan and South Africa.
Also of interest is the lack of labelling requirement for irradiated fast food components and irradiated restaurant food. If you or your organisation have a vested interest in the future of a safe Australian food supply you may consider making a submission.
A copy/paste submission will be supplied on this web site as soon as possible. Individual submissions rather than petition submissions are recommended, so personalise and provide scientific data and references where possible.
