Hon. P.D. Beattie MLA,
Level 15,

Executive Building
100 George St.,
Brisbane Q.4000

Dear Mr. Beattie,

Re:  Nuclear Food Irradiation Plant

The Labour Party has a stated Anti-Nuclear Policy.  Therefore, it is incumbent upon you to stop the proposed nuclear irradiation plant, not only from being implemented in Narangba, but anywhere else in Queensland.

This plant poses high risks to the environment and to the health of the electorate.

I call on you to ban irradiation of food in Queensland, either for local consumption or for export.  Irradiation of foodstuffs is totally unacceptable to me on the following grounds:

Irradiation does not necessarily kill all the micro-organisms that can cause illness, and it can leave intact the toxins they produce.

Used at the last stage of production, irradiation masks dirty handling and processing methods, and unacceptably high levels of bacterial contamination prior to "treatment".

Significant loss of vitamins and essential nutrients.

Risks to health from eating irradiated food.

In view of the foregoing, effective methods other than irradiation, should be investigated in relation to sterilisation and disinfestation.

I also call on you to ban in Queensland any possible, future proposal to use E-Beam Accelerators as an alternative to gamma ray irradiation, as the effects on foods from this form of irradiation are indistinguishable from that caused by gamma rays.

Yours faithfully,
