Re:
Federal Election Issue
'Food Irradiation in Australia'
Irradiation
of foodstuffs in Australia is totally unacceptable to me on the
following grounds:
|
Irradiation does not necessarily kill all the micro-organisms that can cause illness, and it can leave
intact the toxins they produce. |
|
Used at the last stage of production, irradiation masks
dirty processing and handling methods, and unacceptably high
levels of bacterial contamination prior to "treatment". |
|
Significant loss of vitamins and essential nutrients. |
|
Risks to health from eating irradiated food. |
|
Risks to health and the environment from highly radioactive
Cobalt 60. |
In
view of the foregoing, effective methods other than irradiation should
be investigated in relation to sterilisation and disinfestation.
I
also insist that Australia does not turn to E-Beam Accelerators as an
alternative, as the effects on foods from this form of irradiation are
indistinguishable from that caused by gamma rays (i.e. Cobalt 60 or
Caesium 137).
The
Precautionary Principle should apply to food irradiation.
In
conclusion:
1.
I look forward to receiving a clear and unequivocal reply
on your Party's position on the issue of food irradiation.
2.
I ask that you make a clear and unequivocal public statement
in regard to same.
Yours
faithfully,
(In
your letter to Mr. Beazley, you may like to remind him that Labor has a
stated Anti-Nuclear Policy)
